What generation Z wants and needs

Last week Powerful People attended the HR symposium about Generation Z in the workplace.

Generation Z is the group of young professionals who were born between 1997 and 2012. They are currently about 25 years old and younger. They come after the Millennial generation, also known as Generation Y (1981 – 1996).

The results of international scientific research among young professionals were presented during this symposium.

Various speakers spoke about what is important for this generation and how to bind, inspire and develop them. Here we share the most important insights:


– make themselves and their surroundings proud

– experience that they can do something and belong somewhere

– having fun

– being happy

– self-development and personal growth

– be of value and experience a sense of contribution

– being able to navigate their development and work needs

– do what suits them

– learning in a group (intrapersonal learning)

– salary, promotion and working conditions are less important


– different energy than the old ingrained energy and patterns from previous generations

– parenting and guidance with attention for their personal wishes

– if they don’t feel it, they don’t do it: they want to know why they should do something, what’s the use?

– answers to questions such as: Who am I, What can I do and What do I want?


– pay attention to what they get energy from!

– invest in their personal development

– consciously steer on their need for pleasure

– communicate with them about their sense of contribution
